Bread and Salt

A tribute to the East End's historic Ukrainian Community

Bread and Salt: Vancouver Moving Theatre in partnership with the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians presented Bread and Salt, a multi-disciplinary production that told the story of the Ukrainian experience in Vancouver’s East End. Directed by James Fagan Tait, this 85th Anniversary tribute wove together oral history with live theatre and music, haunting choral singing and the driving rhythms of Ukrainian dance.

Bread and Salt featured a multigenerational cast of 90 professional and community actors, singers, dancers and musicians – including the Vancouver Folk Orchestra, Barvinok Choir, Dovbush Dancers and AUUC School of Dance.

Two performances were presented in 2013 during the 10th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival at the Ukrainian Hall, 805 E. Pender Street.  Inspired by stories and memories from the East End’s historic Ukrainian community, Bread & Salt was co-written by Beverly Dobrinsky and Savannah Walling and incorporated writings by Clifford Odets, Helen Potrebenko, Ivan Franko and Taras Shevchenko.
