Every year on the 24th of August, Ukrainians far and wide recognize Ukrainian Independence Day. The Declaration of Independence of Ukraine evoked a separation of Ukraine's state from the Soviet Union on August 24th, 1991. Today, 33 years after this act passed in parliament, Russia relentlessly infringes Ukraines right to sovereignty and continues to threaten Ukrainian culture and life. On this anniversary of Independence, we recognize the continuous fight occurring in Ukraine to maintain this fundamental right and the brave soldiers on the front lines. Today, we think of those we have lost in the fight for independence. Today, we as Ukrainian-Canadians stand together to maintain Ukrainian culture around the world.
